What do I bring to camp? Camp is very active and takes place 90% of the time in the out-of-doors. Old comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty are all that you require. After you register you will be sent a "What To Bring List" which will help you make the decision. You probably won’t need to go buy new things for camp. Most campers sleep in a lightweight sleeping bag. You will probably want some twin bed sheets and a pillow.

my 18th birthday
|
| After being a camper for five years, then skipping two summers, i decided to fulfill my lifelong dream to be a camp counselor at Ocoee.i think i was the second or third youngest at the beginning of the summer and was expecting my 18th birthday in august. Ok I was indescribably happy to be at camp, but i was sort of sad to be away from my home friends on my birthday, especially since my best friend in Memphis was moving away soon. So the Sunday before my birthday, many of my loving co-workers signed up for their night off to be on my birthday. I knew we'd have fun, but had no ideer it would be so magical and sweet. First, we raided the lost and found box in the camp office. i promise that was really fun- i even have a shiny picture to prove it. Then, we went to eat at Fazoli's. I'd heard about Fazoli's, but this was my first visit. Apparently there was this card one could get there, and if you ordered twelve meals or got the card stamped twelve times, you could get a free Fazoli's t-shirt. Well, Jim Jones was with us, and we were like four or five meals short of a t-shirt, so he ordered that many more. i still have my big Fazoli's T-shirt.
Ok then we went to Wal-Mart of course. I've never seen a Wal mart that is so happening on Friday nights as it is in cleveland, TN. I love it. So, we all scattered around the store to get things, glow-in-the dark stickers for campers, junk food, etc. Then, we drove to Chilhowee for the best look-out place ever. I was told to close my eyes, and no one would let me get out of the car. When I opened them, my fellow mates were standing in front of the car headlights with a chocolate pie with crayon candles all lit up. They sang the birthday song, and we all ate it with our fingers.
Then, Jim had us all choose a buddy which made us all feel like campers but it was great, and handed out wint-ogreen lifesavers to everyone. We each took turns looking in our buddies' mouths to see the sparks. Wint-o-green lifesavers really do make sparks when you crunch them! I thought it was only on the t.v. commercials. I had never been so truly tickled before and amazed at the kindness of everyone. It was eight years ago, but that was honestly the best birthday i have ever ever had. I have special place in my heart for the ocoee folks of '95- thank you guys a thousand times for being so great. I'm a lucky girl to have so many warm memories of Ocoee and when I get stressed out the idea of being a camp counselor forever sound really really sweet. |
